ASSESSMENTS
Many times the first step in understanding your environmental issue is to
determine if you really have a problem at all, or what size or type of
problem you have.
Assessment can include:
Initial site visits and information gathering about the situation. This can
be in the form of a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, if you are
transacting a property. A Phase I typically involves an inspection of the
property, interviews with key personnel and reviews of available records
and databases.
Soil boring investigations can be completed to inspect the actual soil
conditions and verify contaminant levels if suspected. Soil boring
investigations can also include the installation of groundwater monitoring
wells. Many times this is referred to as a Phase II Environmental Site
Assessment, if you are transacting a property, or it can be your initial
evaluation of the actual subsurface conditions at your site.
Site classifications are special assessments within the Illinois EPA Leaking
Underground Storage Tank (LUST) program. They involve soil borings and
groundwater investigations to categorize your site as either No Further
Action, Low Priority, or High Priority.
Marlin Environmental Inc. employs various techniques to gather subsurface
information, such as direct-push soil sampling equipment, drilling rigs or
excavation equipment. Assessments can be designed to include any combination
of the above referenced activities or techniques in order to gather only
the information you need at the most reasonable cost.
USTs
Whether your tanks are still in the ground or were removed years ago,
Marlin Environmental Inc. can help you with cleanup or removal. We also
understand how to keep you in business when fuel management, existing
system upgrades, or aboveground storage tanks systems are what you need.
Helping businesses successfully move through and deal with leaking
underground storage tank situations is one of our greatest strengths. Above
all, assisting you in obtaining “No Further Remediation” status is our
goal.
Wetland Delineation and Ecological Services
Wetland areas statewide
and nationally are protected and regulated through the federal Clean Water
Act Section 404 provisions. Local storm water ordinances in the Illinois
counties of Lake, DuPage, Kane and McHenry protect wetland areas by
minimizing development impacts. Marlin Environmental Inc. offers
comprehensive wetland delineation and floristic quality assessment services
to identify the size and character of wetlands in the Great Lakes region.
Additional services include hydrology and water table determinations,
permit applications (federal, state, county) and mitigation design plans
for resolving any regulated impacts to the wetlands. Based on site
characteristics, we can design, implement and monitor a restoration plan
specific to enhancing the habitat for native grasses, forbs and trees to
reestablish their respective plant community. Marlin Environmental Inc. is
an U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (enforce Section 404) recognized wetland
consultant in the state of Illinois and is a Kane County qualified Wetland
Review Specialist.
Furthermore, as urban
sprawl continues to stress the local ecosystems, Marlin Environmental Inc.
offers land planning and resource management tools for communities,
not-for-profit groups, and private companies. We do watershed studies to
ascertain existing and potential impacts to a specific riparian community
or business location as land use changes occur within the watershed.
Development Impact Assessments of planned road building, storm water
control structures, and utility extensions can locate problems before
construction begins. Marlin Environmental Inc. also offers Ecological
Restoration Evaluations to identify natural areas for preservation and
ecological enhancement, such as degraded streams, prairie, savanna, forest,
and floodplain.
Brownfield Site
Evaluations and Restoration Services
Former productive
industrial sites that have been abandoned and contaminated by their past
use are considered brownfield sites. These sites can be located in urban or
rural settings and generally have access to utility infrastructure to
support the restoration of the property into a new productive land use.
These types of sites generally are complicated and demand a personable,
creative consultant, like Marlin Environmental Inc., that can work with
municipalities, private business interests and regulators to identify a consensus
on the restoration services needed to facilitate the future land use of the
property.
Marlin Environmental
Inc. can perform site evaluation services, which may include Phase I &
II Assessments to determine the contaminants of concern, site eligibility,
and the regulatory program best suited for a specific site application.
Further investigations and risk assessment may be required, enabling us to
design a feasible corrective action or restoration plan incorporating the
needs of the various interests groups as a goal. In Illinois, brownfield
sites may be entered into the Illinois EPA's Leaking Underground Storage
Tank (LUST) program or the voluntary Site Remediation Program (SRP). Marlin
Environmental Inc. has experience working with both regulatory programs,
employing flexible, risk-based cleanup plans to achieve a "No Further
Remediation" letter from the Illinois EPA for brownfield sites.
Storm Water
Assessment and SWPPP Design
Storm water runoff from
urban development, including commercial and residential areas and new
construction sites, has long been known as a source of non-point pollution
entering the rivers and lakes of the United States. In an effort to control
and eventually eliminate this pollution, national storm water requirements
were generated under Section 402 of the federal Clean Water Act. Presently,
many industrial and commercial properties depending upon SIC codes and new
construction sites greater than 5-acres in size require a National
Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit to control storm
water runoff. Marlin Environmental Inc. can conduct a storm water
assessment of a facility to determine the level of effort needed to comply
with the federal and state regulations. We can develop a storm water
pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) specific to each respective facility that
identifies best management practices to control urban storm water runoff.
These best management practices (BMPs) include infiltration devices, ponds,
filters, awnings over equipment storage areas, native buffers and
constructed wetlands.
In addition to creating
a SWPPP document, Marlin Environmental Inc. can generate an application for
a NPDES permit. The generation of a NPDES permit application or a SWPPP
document will require an initial storm water assessment, which will be used
to characterize the site conditions. Any pending site changes will be
discussed with the facility manager along with proposed BMPs. This
cooperative effort will enable Marlin Environmental Inc. to create a
functional storm water design for the utilization of effective BMPs within
the SWPPP document submitted to regulators. Corrective actions to be
implemented as part of the SWPPP will be identified and monitored for
success of their completion.
